There are many aspects of any building that can affect the well-being of those people that occupy it. Whilst many of these are self evident and can be measured, compared with acceptable guideline values and deemed satisfactory or otherwise, there are several other factors that are less well understood and which can have detrimental effects to some individuals at certain times. Many of these factors can be interrelated and often the cause of the problem can be unclear, leading to a diagnosis of "Sick Building Syndrome" (SBS). With proper and careful investigation, problems attributed to sick building syndrome can often be linked to tangible factors and these may be identified and quantified. Once the causes of the problem are known, the way forward to resolve the situation becomes clearer and very often a simple solution can be found.
