The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) requires employers to prevent or adequately control the exposure of workers to harmful substances. Many of these substances may have been assigned a Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL) by the Health and Safety Executive in their publication EH40. Harmful substances can be taken into the body by several routes including inhalation, ingestion and through the skin. There is a range of control measures available to prevent or adequately control exposure and the preferred option will vary according to the situation.
