Workplace Surveys and Testing

Local Exhaust Ventilation

Many of us can be exposed to a range of potentially harmful substances whilst carrying out our normal duties at work. There may be dusts, gases, vapours or fibres present in the atmosphere and without adequate control, we may inadvertently take into the body excessive amounts of these substances, causing ourselves harm in some circumstances. The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) requires employers to prevent or adequately control the exposure of workers to harmful substances.

Many of these substances may have been assigned a Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL) by the Health and Safety Executive in their publication EH40.

One key control method is the use of local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems to remove contamination at source and prevent emission into the atmosphere. Where LEV systems are installed, COSHH Regulation 11 requires that they should be kept in an efficient working order and in good repair. COSHH also states that they should be tested and examined by a competent person at regular intervals, maximum interval 14 months, to confirm their effectiveness.

SB Environmental can carry out formal LEV testing in accordance with the requirements of HSE Guidance Note HS(G) 258 "Controlling Airborne Contaminants at Work"

Workplace lighting assessments

Measurement of lighting levels and installations to ensure compliance with HSE Guidance Note HS(G) 38 "Lighting at Work".
